Migrating An Entire WordPress Site

There's one thing you never want, and that's to have your website down for long periods of time. Search around the Internet and there are instructions from installing plugins (i.e., Duplicator) to FTPing into your old host, downloading everything, exporting your database from phpMyAdmin, etc., if you want to move your WordPress site to a different hosting company. This can be a scary and daunting process, especially if you've never done it before.

Fortunately if you're looking to move your WordPress site to a new host or just want to transfer absolutely everything from one WordPress installation to another, you can use the built-in Export/Import feature, rather than having to deal with phpMyAdmin and changing your configuration files.

Here's how to transfer your entire WordPress site - pages, images, posts, everything! to a new WordPress installation.

Before you begin

Make sure that the you've installed the latest WordPress version on your new host.

Migrating WordPress

Log into your old WordPress dashboard and click Tools > Export from the left navigation menu.

Because you're exporting everything, keep the All content option selected and click the Download Export File button.

Download the generated XML file and log into your other installation of WordPress on your new host and go to Tools > Import. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click the Install Now link under WordPress and wait for the importer plugin to download and finish installing.

Click the Run Importer link.

Click the Choose File button and select the XML file you downloaded from your original WordPress site.

Click the Upload file and import button to start the import.

Because you're importing new posts and pages, WordPress will prompt you to assign the imported content to existing users on the new WordPress site or create new users.

Hit the Submit button and you're done!

Note that this process only transfers your posts, pages, and media. Any plugins and themes you have installed are not part of the Export/Import process.
